Herb DescriptionEyebright (Euphrasia) is a herbaceous flowering plant, is deep-rooted to British and Europe naturalized locally in some regions of the USA. This plant is a genus of more than 450 species belongs to Orobanchaceae family. The flower of Eyebright also called as Ocularia. It is an elegant small plant reach up to 4 - 8 inches high. Eyebright are semi-parasitic on grasses . Eyebright , as its name imply, is one of the initial herbal sources of eye care. Eyebright is parasitic plant that matures in fields and meadow regions of most temperate climate regions of the world.The plant requires sandy,loamy and heavy soils. Eyebright produces violet-like, white, light red, or purple blossoms,generally with purple lines or yellow dots on them. It flowers in July to September. The blossoms are hermaphrodite and are pollinated by Bees. High demand and harvesting of this plant has made eyebright an endangered species in some parts of the world. Eyebright has been depended upon for at least 2000 years in the treatment of numbers of eye disorders. Because of its astringent properties, it was used primarily in the Middle Ages as a tonic . Eyebright is rich in iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, and tannins. Presently eyebright is used more frequently for ebb eye disorders such as inflamed eye, eye strain, pink eye and, irritated and sore eyes. Properties
Uses and BenefitsEyebright has been used top treat various disorders of the nose, sinuses, and eyes,irritation &inflammation of the eyelids, eye styes,eye fatigue problems, some other eye disorders, also hoarseness and coughs . Eyebright is used internally to maintain good vision and eye health by supporting the liver among other organs in such a way as to cleanse the blood supply to the eyes. It is internally used as a powerful anti-catarrhal to treat sinusitis ,nasal catarrh, and other congestive states, such as hay fever, acute coryza,lachrymation & irritable sneezing .Eyebright may be used as a mouthwash or gargle, for inflammation of the mouth or throat. Externally it is used as an eyewash made from Eyebright and other herbs can be abating to irritated, inflamed eyes. Eyebright is able to counter catarrh means that it is generally taken for infectious and allergic cases affecting the eyes, middle ear, sinuses and nasal passages. Eyebright as an anti-inflammatory and astringent actions make it effective in many cases, particularly those involving the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract and is generally efficacious for sore, itchy eyes which may have a discharge. It can be used internally as an infusion. It is efficacious to ebb redness and swelling as well as in conjunctivitis ,blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids and lashes causing flaking and redness) ,hay fever ,tired eyes & stye . Side EffectsIt is reported that oral eyebright may produce nausea, confusion, or sweating. Eyebright applied to the eyes has been connected with side effects such as photosensitivity, eye pressure changes, and swollen eyelids. It is recommended that eyebright should not be used during pregnancy or lactation. If individual feels any kind of side effects such as severe eye pressure, headache, itching, red, swollen eyelids, increases sensitivity to light, vision problems, or confusion in combination with eyebright then call the health care practitioner promptly. It is recommended not to use eyebright in the eyes if person wear any kind of contact lenses. If individual have had any recent eye surgery such as laser vision correction, cataract surgery, cornea transplant surgery, etc, it is prescribed not to take eyebright without consulting a physician.
