Herb DescriptionEvening primrose (Oenothera biennis), a small yellow wildflower, is a genus of about 125 species of biennial ,annual and herbaceous perennial flowering plants. It grows in temperate parts all over North America, Europe, and many other regions throughout the world, but it is most commonly matures and used in Canada and America. It is a member of Onagraceae family .Evening primrose can be reach up to 8 feet in height, and it has beautiful flowers. It blooms all throughout the summer, but each flower lasts only single day. It flowers as the sun sets and then shrivels in the sunlight, It generally open between 6 and 7 o'clock in the evening, hence the name of Evening Primrose. Leaves are 1 inch or more wide, 3 - 5 inches long, pointed, with nearly entire margins and covered with small hairs. The root is fusiform ,biennial, and fibrous, yellowish on the outer side and white inside.The seeds of this plant are about 5 cm long , are crushed that contain oil which is rich in essential fatty acids and is touted among nutritionists for its curing actions & also used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals .These polyunsaturated fats are beneficial fats, unlike the saturated fats that contribute to heart symptoms . Drug InteractionsEvening primrose oil may enhance the action of ceftazidime, an antibiotic in a class called as cephalosporins, against a numbers of bacterial infections. Evening primrose oil may heighten the actions of anti-cancer treatments, such as tamoxifen, doxorubicin, cisplatin, carboplatin, idarubicin, mitoxantrone,vincristine, and vinblastine. |
